The Nevada Moonshot Flight Crew

The program will be for five selected youth who have a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and aspirations to deepen their connection to the STEM field to advocate for girls in STEM in Nevada and nationally!
 
The Nevada Moonshot Flight Crew program will provide 6 months of impactful STEM experiences beyond the classroom!
Members will receive trainings on public speaking, advocacy, and leadership, as well as opportunities to participate in STEM experiences and engage with mentors. Those selected will also be offered the chance to participate in public speaking opportunities to share their  STEM stories and encourage other youth to explore careers in STEM!

A $500 scholarship to support the continuation of STEM educational experiences will be given to those who are selected for the Flight Crew!

Program will offer monthly experiences that may be virtual and/or in-person locally. Program ends 8/31/2023.
Applicant Requirements:
  • Youth currently living in Nevada.
  • Youth age 12 to 16 who identify as female, non-binary, and/or gender-expansive.
  • Youth who have participated in or are currently participating in out of school time learning activities, summer programs and/or clubs. 
Individuals who are members of a tribe, are part of a racial/ethnic minority group, and/or reside in rural Nevada counties are encouraged to apply.

Official Rules
What is the Nevada Flight Crew: 
The Nevada Flight Crew was created in model of the Million Girls Moonshot inaugural youth Flight Crew, whose goal is to recruit one representative of each state to advocate for girls in STEM on a national level. The goal of the Nevada Flight Crew is to recruit five girls to represent their local areas to advocate for girls in STEM. Moreover, the Nevada Flight Crew allows girls and gender expansive youth to find opportunities and experiences that can further their interests in STEM and provide a safe space to explore their potential. 
 
What to Expect as a Nevada Flight Crew Member:
As a Nevada Flight Crew Member, you can expect to engage with four other members in group meetings and activities involving public speaking, advocacy, and leadership. Flight Crew Activities may include, but are not limited to, speaking at conferences, recording public service announcement (PSA) videos, visiting local STEM organizations as part of a learning experience, etc. The Nevada Flight Crew aims to express first-hand, impactful STEM experiences beyond the classroom that breaks down stereotypes and sparks interest in STEM. Members will build STEM skills through teamwork and problem solving and will be able to connect these skills to everyday life. 
 
What is Expected of a Nevada Flight Crew Member:
Each Flight Crew Member must do their best to attend all group meetings and participate in Flight Crew activities.
  • NAN will work with flight crew members and their families to ensure that activities take place in a time and location most convenient for the group.
  • Attendance to all group meetings and activities that require travel outside of the local community will be eligible for reimbursement or financial support.
 
Each Flight Crew Member must be willing to speak in a public setting about their experiences in STEM (training, practice opportunities, and other support will be provided). This may include, but not limited to:
  • Conference presentations
  • Recorded public service announcements (PSAs)
  • Meetings with policymakers and education administrators
                 
What is Million Girls Moonshot:

The Million Girls Moonshot is a nationwide initiative to get 1 million girls into STEM learning activities by 2025. Its mission is to reimagine who can be the future by inspiring them to be engineers, builders, makers, innovators, and problem solvers. To learn more about the initiative, visit
